Despite promising developments, still millions of people in Uganda live in hard to access and isolated areas far from hospitals or health centres. Good and sometimes lifesaving care for them is often inaccessible. This not only results in high maternal and infant mortality, but it also undermines health, vitality and labour productivity of communities and maintains poverty. A huge challenge but with a simple solution. Uganda has an army of community health workers, village health team members (VHT), who have been trained to give basic health care, monitor patients and refer to clinics. They are only reaching too few people due to a simple, but tough reason: lack of affordable and efficient transport. CooP-Uganda equips community health workers with bicycles and health centres with bicycle ambulances.
